Rivers in Flood in the Brecon Beacons

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

These are the rivers Mellte and Sychryd in flood during November 2010. In this video you can see the famous waterfalls Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn on the River Mellte and Bwa Maen on the River Sychryd. These are situated within the famous waterfalls area of the National Park. However the waterfalls in this video are almost unrecognisable due to the volume of water. The noise alone is awesome!

Brecon Beacons Walks Crashed Wellington Bomber

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Crashed World War II Wellington Bomber, Garreg Goch

The mountainous areas of the Brecon Beacons National Park are without question a paradise for all those who love walking in the hills and include the highest peaks in southern Britain. However, the rolling hills and gentle landscape hide a harsher and more sinister side to their existence. In bad weather conditions, this area can be as harsh and unforgiving as anywhere in the world. It is not just by accident therefore, that the Special Air Service (SAS), choose this part of Wales for much of their training and selection process. Over thirty aircraft crash sites are recorded within the Park, and a booklet containing the location and brief history of each is available from offices of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. Tragically, many have been fateful and some sites are marked by memorial cairns and plaques inscribed with the names of those lost.

Brecon Beacons Walk Ideas – Western Brecon Beacons

Today, at many sites, there is little or no evidence of wreckage and crash sites can be found only by map reference and individual story. The crash site of Wellington Bomber MF509, at Garreg Goch (Red Stone), in the western Beacons, (Grid Ref: SN817168) still has a great deal of wreckage and the history of this crash is both interesting and heart rendering. On the night of 20th November 1944, Wellington MF509 from 22 Operational Training Unit, Wellesbourne, Mountford, on a cross country exercise, developed trouble in the starboard Hercules XVI engine and flew into shower clouds, building up heavy layers of ice on the wings. With insufficient power from the port engine, the aircraft lost height and crashed into Garreg Goch killing all six Canadian crew members.

The six men killed were:

Sgt. Charles Hamel – Pilot

Sgt: Jules Robert Rene Villeneuve – Navigator

F/Off. William Joseph Allison -Bomb Aimer

Sgt. Joseph Paul Ernest Burke – Air Gunner

Sgt. Arthur Grouix – Air Gunner

Sgt.Gerard Dusablon – Air Gunner

All the crew were interred with full military honours, at the Canadian War Cemetery at Blacon, Chester, England. Wreckage is scattered over a wide area, with the main wheel being a very long way from the main site near the river Giedd. Until recently, the Canadian families of the crew, knew nothing of the circumstances or location of the crash, nor of the existence of the memorial plaque that now stands at Garreg Goch.

In 2005, the photograph of an airman, found at the site in 1944, was placed on the Internet in an effort to identify him. This stimulated co-operation between McGill University in Montreal, Canada and the people of the Swansea Valley. Only then, some 60 years later, did the families know the specific fate of their loved ones and of the plane. The crash site is in a remote and lonely spot, at about 520 metres above the upper Swansea Valley. In May 2006, a climb to the site, was undertaken by representatives from McGill University, surviving family members of the crew and people from the Swansea Valley. Later, in November of that year, McGill University established a display detailing Wellington MF509′s story.

Call of the Wild have worked with and come into contact with a number of celebrities, sports clubs and well known individuals during. Here we have set out a quick summary of some familiar names and faces and what they have done with Call of the Wild

Mackenzie Crook

Mackenzie is famous for playing the role of Gareth in Ricky Gervais’ “The Office” and also playing one of the Pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnnie Depp.

This is Mackenzie Crook, filming with Call of the Wild in Wales. We provided the stunt double for him for this jump. However he did do the jump himself afterwards. We do quite a bit of work with film companies looking for outdoor venues for their filming in Wales. It is difficult to get permission at times from land owners which it is why it is useful having our own 70 acre farm come training centre for this kind of thing.

Film credits include:

The Merchant of Venice – Launcelot Gobbo
[Michael Radford, Arclight Films]
Brothers Grimm – Hidlick
[Terry Gilliam, Miramax]
Churchill: The Hollywood Years – Jimmy Charoo
[Peter Richardson, Pathe]
Pirates Of The Caribbean – Ragetti
[Gore Verbinski, Buena Vista]
Sex Lives Of The Potato Men – Ferris
[Andy Humphries, Entertainment]

Rob Brydon – Actor, Comedian & Writer

Rob Brydon with Call of the Wild’s Sales Director at the National Tourism AwardsWe met Rob Brydon at the National Tourism Awards when we won the National Team Building Company of the Year Award. Rob was the cabaret and as we were sitting in the front decided that it would be a good idea to pick on our table. Here he is with our Kevin. He first came to the public’s attention in 2000 with the shows Marion and Geoff and Human Remains, winning British Comedy Awards for both. Since then his comedy credits have included A Small Summer Party, The Keith Barret Show, Directors Commentary, Supernova, Cruise Of The Gods, Black Books, I’m Alan Partridge, Little Britain, Jack Dee Live At The Apollo, Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive, QI, The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year, Have I Got News For You and Gavin and Stacey

Llanelli Scarlets Rugby Team

The Scarlets took part in one of our team development days. They particularly concentraded on goal setting as a team and as individuals. The day was spent at our training centre in the Brecon Beacons National Park. A short clip of this day can be viewed by clicking here. All the main squad attended including Dwayne peel, Stephen Jones, Simon Easterby and Mark Jones.

Neath/Swansea Ospreys Rugby Team

Group photo of Ospreys rugby team canyoning with Call of the WildThe Ospreys came to us for a fun team building day. The squad spent the day experiencing canyoning in the Brecon Beacons National Park. They had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. For more information on canyoning click here.

Here’s part of the squad posing before they jump into the river. I think we used up most of our XXL wet suits that day given the size of guys that tyrned up. They were pretty big.

Here are a few of the guys as they are getting out of the water after one of the exhilerating challenges. Hopefully this is a smile of delight rather than a nervous smile.

Ben Fogle – BBC TV Presenter

Ben Fogle travel writer, presenter and adventurer was filming with us for 14 days. This is Ben with the team on location in Wales filming the next series of Extreme Dreams . This is a reality show where in the last series Ben Fogle took people trekking in the Andes, across Arctic glaciers, through the Guyanan jungle and up Mount Kilimanjaro. In this next series he visits Nepal, Uganda, Libya, Papua New Guinea & Venezuela.

Huw Edwards – BBC TV News

Huw Edwards, BBC Presenter with the Call of the Wild Team at the National Tourism Awards

Huw Edwards was hosting the National Tourism Awards held in October 2007. Not the clearest photo ever not because of any heavy breathing just the amount of fry ice around on the stage.

Max Boyce – Legendary Welsh Entertainer

Mike Heath, one of our senior instructors, also happens to be the Captain of the local Glynneath Golf Club. The club President is that legendary Welsh entertainer Max Boyce. Here is Max, in the middle of Mike on Max’s left and Gerald Evans on his right at the Club Captains Dinner.

Star Gazing in the Brecon Beacons

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Do you know your Uranus from your Milky Way? And that’s not an anatomical question. Wherever you are in the world, there will always be stars in the night sky above. Star gazing never fails to inspire people no matter your age whether 10 or 110! Whether it be a solitary star or a shooting star flying across the night sky – that sense of wonder never diminishes.

And stars are not the only attraction – there are planets, comets and galaxies too. Most have been in the skies above for millions and millions of years, which is part of the appeal for stargazers, amateurs and enthusiasts alike.

Why the Brecon Beacons National Park for Star Gazing

Most visitors come to the Park for the wilderness feel and wild outdoor expereince. This is enhanced by the big skies we have in the Park. Why should this experience and enjoyment end when the sun goes down? Big dark skies open spaces with no light pollution are all part of the outdoor experience that is the Brecon Beacons. The sky at night should be as a much a part of your visit as the daytime activities.

Particularly easy to spot in the UK’s winter skies is Orion, a constellation also known as the Hunter, thanks to three bright stars in a row which form Orion’s “belt. Would you know how to find the North Star? Where to find the Great Bear, and it’s not in a zoo!

What We Offer

Visit our centre in the Brecon Beacons with no light pollution to observe the night sky. Either bring your own telescopes, binoculars or just use the naked eye to view the big skies we regularly experience. With one of our staff talking you through what can be seen illustrated with star charts and a small planetarium.

Golf

What is Golf?

I would be amazed if there is anyone out there who doesn’t know what golf is. Wikipedia describes Golf as a sport in which individual players or teams hit a ball into a hole using various clubs and also is one of the few ball games that does not use a fixed standard playing area. It is defined in the Rules of Golf as “playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules.”

Who Can Play Golf ?

Surfing in Wales

Monday, September 5th, 2011

What is Surfing?

Surfing and learning how to surf involves riding a crest of a wave – literally. You try and surf the white horse, that is the white top of the wave as it begins to fall over itself. Obviously you don’t just use your feet for this, you use a surfboard. Surfboards are long, buoyant, relatively light, but strong enough to support an individual standing on them. Like the sport itself, they were invented in Polynesia, where they were usually made of wood from local trees. Modern surfboards are made from polyutharane or polystyrene foam covered with layers of fibreglass. You have to try surfing in Wales!

What Will I Be Doing During the Surfing Session?

You will be given surfing lessons by our qualified instructors in the art of surfing. The surf school will introduce you to the techniques needed to sit, kneel and stand on the board. By the end of the session the aim is to get you standing on the board and riding those waves. Obviously you’ll have to bleach your hair and start calling everyone ‘dude’. You’ll be learning how to surf at a top surf school in Wales.

“I was the stag and fully enjoyed every part. You really made this a great weekend.” Chris Nicholson

Who Can Do Surfing?

Learning how to surf in Wales is suitable for all ages and abilities. It is an excellent activity for both adults and children. For younger children we start them with body boarding and then progress up to full boards. A good group activity to see who an stand first. Excellent for posing value.

If the surfs up and the surf conditions are right anyone can enjoy a surf holiday in Wales.

Where Can I Learn to Surf in Wales?

Call of the Wild’s surfing sessions are based at one of the premier surf spots in the UK -  the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea in Wales. The Gower, which was the first place in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has some fantastic world famous beaches and waves which we use for surfing. These include Caswell Bay and Llangennith. If you want to learn to surf then forget Newquay and come to us.

Duration/Length of the Surfing session?

This is one of the best beaches with surf in Wales for surfing. This is variable depending on the size, nature of the group, nature of the event and the prevailing surf conditions on the day. As a guide, the surfing session would normally last around 3 – 4 hours.
