Once in a Lifetime Overseas Expeditions

As well as offering a huge range of exhilarating activity breaks based in the UK, we offer ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences. These take the form of expeditions to all areas of the world, require training prior to the event and are only for those determined to experience the ultimate challenge.
All expeditions are lead by Call of the Wild instructors and no two expeditions are the same. We seek to complete approximately five major expeditions a year. These extreme challenges will include climbing virgin peaks, survival treks and 4×4 driving in the Australian bush, exploring the jungles of Borneo and even visiting Everest and the North Pole!

Next Overseas Trip:

Cho Oyu 8201m – Nepal/Tibet

Dates : Aug – Oct 2012

Shake out your down jacket, get training, and climb an 8000 metre peak. At 8201m, Cho Oyu is the world’s sixth highest mountain and a true Himalayan giant that straddles the Nepal/Tibet border. With one of the highest success rates, low technical difficulty and best safety records,it is an ideal first 8000m peak.

Camp One on Cho Oyu,Mountain , HimalayasWe climb Cho Oyu from the Tibetan side via the classic North West face. The expedition starts in Kathmandu where we make our final preparations before flying to Lhasa, the capitol of Tibet.

Base camp is at about 5700m, so we take our time getting there, breaking the road journey up with opportunities for sight seeing and all the important acclimatisation walks en route.

Base camp will be home for up to three and a half weeks while we climb the mountain and so will be as comfortable as possible with plenty of good food. Our strong sherpa team will prepare the route, fixing ropes and stocking our higher camps with food, gas and oxygen so that everything is in place ready for our summit push – on which they will accompany us.

With this ‘state of the art’ support and leadership from Rolfe Oostra, Kenton Cool and Guy willet your chances of success are high.

To be prepared for climbing Cho Oyu, you will need a good grounding in mountaineering and, ideally, will have at least climbed to 6000m. Although Cho Oyu is often considered the easiest of the 8000m peaks, it is certainly not ‘easy’.

You will need a strong determination and much dedication, as well as good physical fitness and health to reach the summit.

Examples of Overseas Trips

Mount Kenya

An expedition to the second highest peak on the African Continent followed by a two day safari to view the magnificent Kenyan game reserves. This also includes a well deserved rest on the beaches around Mombasa. We climb Mt. Kenya by the quiet but spectacular Sirimon route, allowing ourselves plenty of time to acclimatise. After a dawn assault on the summit for a spectacular sunrise, we descend by the more popular Nara Moru route. We then move onto a walking and Landrover safari before a little luxury on the coast. This stretch of the Indian Ocean gives some of the world’s best diving. Why not take a trip on a Dhow or visit the old towns famous for their spices and fascinating history associated with the slave trade. This makes a fitting climax to a trip where we experience all the extremes of this stunning continent.

  • Duration – 15 Days
  • Maximum Group Size – 16
  • No. of Training Weekends – None
  • Cost – From £1,600. Price on application

Everest Base Camp, Kongma Tse (5,820m) & Pokalde (5,806m)

November – December

Two of the best view points in the Himalayas. These two peaks look out on Nupste and the peaks of Everest. Non-technical rock and snow climbs lead, via narrow ridges, to these 19,000 ft + summits. We explore Kathmandu, take a stunning flight through the mountains and follow the classic trek to Everest Base Camp. We then ascend a deserted high valley, now fully acclimatised and spend several days attempting the adjacent peaks, or just rest and relax in this spectacular setting.

  • Duration – 24 days
  • Maximum Group Size – 12
  • No.of Training Weekends – One
  • Cost – From £2,300 per person. Detailed price on application

Wilderness Climbing in Nepal

March 2012 and February 2012

A brilliant trek and a rare opportunity to attempt so many peaks in one expedition. If you only go to Nepal once, do this!

This expedition is for connoisseurs of wild places. If you have been to Nepal before then this will still give you hidden surprises and get you away from the tourist routes. We take the pilgrimage path to Gosainkund lake before continuing to the quieter Gamesh Himal. Base camp is established at the head of the Mailung Khola. We shall spend time resting and climbing in the Valley before attempting Paldor at just under 20,000ft. We leave the valley on the Tiru Danda which is known as the “finest high ridge scrambling in Nepal”. This route takes us over 5 days to the hustle and bustle of Tristuli and then back to Kathmandu. Experience if ice axe and crampons is needed for most of the peaks. However, the trek is worth doing just for the wilderness experience alone.

  • Duration – 30 days
  • Group Size – 10
  • No. of Training Weekends – Three (One in Winter Conditions in Scotland)
  • Cost – From £2,800 per person. Detailed price on application

Schweizerland Alps – Greenland Interior

We fly, via Iceland, to the airstrip of Kulusuk near Ammassalik on the east coast of Greenland. From there we take a helicopter flight to a remote mountain hut. The views are stunning and this is an excellent base to explore the “Klare Gletscher” region. Several easy ascents will be made of local peaks, involving both rock scrambling and Grade I and II snow routes before the option of ski touring onto the icecap is tried on stable glaciers. Skiing experience is not necessary. Her we may camp or make snowholes.. There are many opportunities for first ascents on mountains ranging from 7-10,000feet in the vicinity. We leave the area and descend on skis for two/three days on glaciers down to the coast village of Kummit before being helicoptered out.

  • Duration – 20 days approx.
  • Maximum Group Size – 10
  • No.of Training Weekends – 2
  • Cost – From £4,000 per person. Price on application

Aconcagua, South America – The Worlds Highest trekking peak at 6,959m

We climb Aconcagua by the Horcones route. A technically straight forward route, which is mainly on good trails but through steep rock scenery on the final approach to the summit ridge. Snow and ice will be encountered on the final day and an ice axe and crampons will be carried. With thorough acclimatisation we hope to get all our clients to the top. We spend time exploring the local mountains, taking smaller peaks in our preparation. Even without reaching the summit, this remarkable area is a mountain paradise with superb treks surrounded by snow clad peaks.

  • Duration – 24 days
  • Maximum Group Size – 15
  • No.of Training Weekends – 1
  • Cost – On application

Ontario, Canada

1. 850km Voyage Round Algonquin Park by Ski Doo

Mid January to Mid March

This is the ultimate winter adventure – an 850 kilometre circular expedition through spectacular wild forests and frozen landscapes of Ontario by snowmobile!! Ontario has the largest, and possibly the best, snowmobile trail system in the world, and we will be taking full advantage of it! We will explore the extensive network of wilderness snowmobile trails and logging roads as we voyage Round Algonquin Park (RAP ride). Our path will lead us along snowmobile trails that cut through thick, untamed forests, zoom down a 30 m wide Hydro “Right Of Way”, and take us into quaint little country villages. Along the way we will stop our snowmobiles at spectacular vantage points and scenic lookouts.

This trip can be done in 3-4 days of “hard” snowmobile riding, but we plan to do it in a more leisurely 5 full days. We will snowmobile between 175 – 250 km each day (6 – 9 hours) before arriving at our resort or motel for the evening (a couple have hot tubs!). All lodgings have restaurants so we don’t need to cook.

  • Duration – 8 days
  • Maximum Group Size – 20
  • Cost – On application

2. 5 Day Algonquin Park Canoe Trip

June to August 2012

This exciting programme will give you 5 days of Wilderness Canoe Camping into the heart of the world famous Algonquin Park. This huge wilderness Park is the oldest, and one of the largest in Ontario. The park was established in 1893 and comprises an astonishing 7,725 square kilometres of forests, lakes, and rivers. It is ¼ the size of Hawaii, the same size as Wales, 3 times larger than Luxembourg, and 7 times larger than Hong Kong! Within its borders can be found moose, deer, beaver, hawks, eagles, bears, and even wolves! For 5 days we will be living much like the Indians and early explorers did. Travelling by 2 person canoe, we paddle across many lakes, portage over forest trails, swim in clear clean waters, cook by a fire, and sleep in tents under the stars! We will cover about 10-20 km per day of wilderness canoe routes, with 1 day out for hiking or relaxing by the water! We can almost guarantee that we will come across a moose or two grazing by the waters edge! If we’re lucky we may even hear wolves howling in the distance at night!
